The mermaid is back in her own world, one of water and currents that ebb and flow. But she finds herself keeping closer to the shore than usual. Betty just can't bring herself to leave for good. Something keeps her there, swimming back and forth just out of sight under the water's surface. The memory of a kind face and brown eyes...
When he doesn't come back to the beach, she swims closer and closer to the boats tied there. It's dangerous, she knows. There are many men there. But she continues to swim between them, even as they pull away from the docks. Even as the fog rolls in, she follows them out into the sea.
There's a faint sound with the wind. A sad song without words, the song of a mermaid looking for the one that got away. It has all the men on edge, not wanting to admit that they were hearing it.
